Daisy and the Snow #SOL2015 Day Two

Daisy in the snow I have written before about my cat–she is a rescue cat in that she rescued herself by climbing up a hill and into our yard. I checked with the few neighbors that we have, but no one was missing a kitten. That was 18 months ago.

Daisy has been an indoor/outdoor cat. We live in a heavily wooded area, as you can see in the background, so we want to be sure that she does not become coyote food at night. Last winter’s polar vortex meant that she spend a lot of the winter inside because of the arctic cold.

But this past Sunday, we received 8 inches of snow on top of the 4 inches we already had on the ground with daytime temperature in the mid-20’s. No reason to keep a hyper kitty inside, but how would she deal with really deep snow? Well, on our deck (which is off our second-story bedroom), Daisy safely leaped up onto the railing, knocking the snow out of her way. After we let her out into the backyard, she leaped across the yard to hunt for voles. And we laughed at her for thinking that she could feel the voles under the snow and frozen ground.

Daisy loved her snow day coming inside for a few minutes of warmth, food, and water, and then quickly meowing at the door to return to her snow. And lo and behold! She not only caught and killed a vole, she also got her first spring bird.
